I believe that you should know the general idea of your thesis when starting your research paper.  This way it will help you look at the information you need and not get side-tracked and start to rant about something that does not have to do with the subject.  I have always learned that I should start a paper with your main idea, or thesis, because it will help you in the long run.  I feel like this is a good thing to keep doing.  As long as you are still open to other belief's and opinions it does not hurt to already have an idea/ thesis in mind while researching for your paper.

  1. What of your own personal experiences can you connect to the topic/information in this post?

The most recent paper I wrote for Professor Byxbe's class wasn't one of my best and I can honestly say because I got to my thesis in my third paragraph. After reading it over again to see why I received the grade I did one of her comments were, "I feel like this is where your paper begins." and that unfortunately was a few paragraphs down. When I went back and read it I was literally talking off topic for the first two-three pages and then eventually got to my thesis. I realized that any reader would get bored and eventually drift off because I myself did. I agree with you in your statement of having a general idea of a thesis statement. It is important to be open to other sources of discussions, but having a having a thesis statement will not help you drift off or most importantly, and the one I struggle with mostly, is to go on a rant. Having a thesis statement given and sticking to it, really does, as you say, "help you in the long run." It helps your writing be more concise and easier to follow.
